Thirty-one years after the first internet protocol structure was put in place, the internet is in danger of running out of IP addresses – at least according to Google’s chief internet evangelist Vint Cerf. The man often referred to as “the father of the internet” recently talked up the next-gen IP addressing scheme, IPv6, and the need for a transition from the current IPv4.
According to Cerf, out of the 4.2 billion possible IP addresses, there are only around 600 million left. While that may sound like an awful lot, with …

Microsoft has confirmed that applications for simple activities such as e-mail and photo editing won’t be included with Windows 7. Specifically, Photo Gallery, Windows Mail and Movie Maker will be ditched in favor of optional downloadable apps that tap into Windows Live and offer the same functionality. The company argues that this will ensure a quicker turnaround for the launch of Windows 7 and that it opens up the possibility of working with partners down the line.
Speaking to CNET.com, Windows Live general manager Brian Hall said the company decided it …

Remember when Google used to be the underdog? Those days have long since passed. So far gone, in fact, that Google has been rated as one of the 10 most valuable brand names in the world. It is now sitting up there with huge brand names that go back decades or even over a century like Coca-Cola and IBM.
That’s a very high place to be – it puts them above companies like Nintendo, Nokia, Apple and many others who have had tangible hardware for many years longer than Google has …

Despite growing signals that Google’s advertising pact with Yahoo might be challenged by antitrust authorities in the US and EU, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said the company expects to implement it, as planned, in October – even if government regulators need more time to assess whether the alliance will diminish competition.
Google already delayed the deal by three months when initial concerns were raised by U.S. authorities. The search giant, however, believes that the deal was designed in such a way to meet government standards and that a further delay will …

How far are we away from a Windows 7 beta? Apparently only a month away. Considering that six years traversed between the release of XP and Vista, that’s certainly putting some racing stripes on development and getting it out the door fast. Of course, this is just a rumor. There is some other interesting information on it, such as that the beta itself will be revealed via Microsoft’s Professional Developer Conference, as well as a potential release date of Summer 2009.
Last month, Microsoft opened a blog about the development of …

Confirming earlier reports, Intel has officially unveiled its six-core server microprocessors. Codenamed Dunnington, the new chips are part of the Xeon 7400 family of processors, which comes in four-core and six-core versions designed to be used in systems with four or more processors.
Intel says the new chips deliver 50 percent better performance and 10 percent lower power consumption than the previous line of Xeon CPUs. Much of this performance boost logically comes from the extra cores, but also due to the included 16MB of shared L3 cache, marking the first …

Spore has been rife with controversy from well before release, both in and out of the context of gaming. When it comes to gamers in particular, there was a lot of negative feedback given to EA over their DRM. They responded, but not in kind, and it seems that despite all the heavy locking they attempted to do on the game it is being very heavily pirated. In fact, it seems that at the moment there are more pirated copies of Spore running than legal copies.
With the budget it …
